The Annals Tacitus Translated by Alfred John Church and William Jackson Brodribb The Annals was Tacitus' final work and provides a key source for modern understanding of the history of the Roman Empire from the beginning of the reign of Tiberius in AD 14 to the end of the reign of Nero, in AD 68. Tacitus wrote the Annals in at least 16 books, but books 7–10 and parts of books 5, 6, 11 and 16 are missing. Tacitus' Histories and Annals together amounted to 30 books; although some scholars disagree about which work to assign some books to, traditionally 14 are assigned to Histories and 16 to Annals. Of the 30 books referred to by Jerome about half have survived. Modern scholars believe that as a Roman senator, Tacitus had access to Acta Senatus—the Roman senate's records—which provided a solid basis for his work. Although Tacitus refers to part of his work as "my annals", the title of the work Annals used today was not assigned by Tacitus himself, but derives from its year-by-year structure. The name of the current manuscript seems to be "Books of History from the Death of the Divine Augustus" (Ab Excessu divi Augusti Historiarum Libri).

Fascinating.
Received this marvelous book in a timely manner. It was a gift for my husband.
Five Stars
The book is bound cheaply in some kind of poor quality imitation leather. Don't trust the description---it is NOT real leather.
Shipped well. Great for the classical historian.
This book arrived quickly and looks beautiful on my shelf. I haven't had time to read it yet, but am excited to do so.
Tacitus is considered the most difficult Roman historian to translate and some of this follows through in the translation; Tacitus is the Hemingway of Rome, assuming readers know the subjects he's covering and are reading him for the subversive context rather than for basic knowledge. He famously sums up eight centuries of Roman history in the first pages, before delving deeper into his main obsession, freedom. He would be a must read for a well educated conservative if that were not a dying breed.

This edition is beautifully crafted and worth every penny and then some. If you recognize the author and know Roman history it is a steal. If you are interested in the subject and don't know Roman history I'd work my way through a few library books first and then buy this wonderful copy. It's perfect for some one who knows what s/he is getting; it's a bit much for an introduction unless you're a Mensa quality thinker however.
The book is an excellent reprint, bound in a beautiful covering that really catches the eye.
